The Ventures - Slaughter on Tenth Avenue - Bob Bogle Tribute

Big Jer
Sadly, Bob Bogle of The Ventures died yesterday at the age of 75.  This was my all time favorite of theirs'...

may he surf in peace. Were those "Mostrite" guitars they used? and weren't they the only people who played them?
I don't really remember that song. what year are we talkin' about?

Yes, they only played Mosrite guitars.  I believe some others also used them, but I can't recall who.

That song would have been circa 1965 or so. I remember my brother playing the album on my Mom's living room stereo, like it was yesterday. I have the CD now, it's called "The Ventures Knock Me Out" & I still enjoy it.

Though admittedly not a huge fan of this genre, I will give the Ventures and Bob Bogle a huge "attaboy" for pioneering guitar-oriented music across the globe, with (in hockey terms here) a HUGE assist from Cliff Richard's band in the late 1950's and early 1960's, Great Britain's one and only "The Shadows".

Yes, you are right, they were one of the reasons I couldn't wait to own & play an electric guitar.

I had to see if there were any Shadows videos (since I don't remember them) & what do you know, they had this little gem. The Shadows' version of The Ventures' biggest hit, 'Walk Don't Run'.

Excellent- Both bands, The Shadows and The Ventures, are favorites of mine. So much that I have been assembling a Channel of Surf Music on Pandora, primarily based on Dick Dale and these two bands. These are two great selections of the many posted on YouTube. Another favorite is by Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - "Having An Average Weekend" used as the theme music for "Kids in the Hall"

I've been away from my personal email for a couple of weeks.  Just catching up - what a great find!
Live sound from '66.  Thanks

If you like the Ventures you need to check this out:

Skip the rock 'n roll hall of fame intro stuff and go directly to 4:20, then after that the next tune starts at the 7:00 mark. Very cool vid.

Enjoy!
