OK...something really different - Bill Frisell

JoeMan
I'm not much of a fan of the Grateful Dead...but it's been appropriately said that Bill Frisell is the Grateful Dead of jazz.  If you have 9:52 to chill and check something mellow yet well off the beaten path...here ya go...

That hit the mark JoeMan. Chill is the word. It was so well worth the 9:52 that I doubled it!

Excellent selection my man...

YES!!! As much as I love the old (and new) rock stuff this is the coolest vid I've seen in a while.

And if anyone ever wondered if lap steel could do jazz, well, here you go. Solo starts at the 6:40 mark.

Yep, I knew ya'd love that lap steel.  And I dig how Bill starts tearing it up a bit, distortion not spared, at the 5:15 marker.  Jerry, maybe your blood pressure went back up just a tad during that part?  :-)

If anyone were to think...there is no real music structure in this type of Frisell number...just watch how the brass never miss hitting right on the mark.

There's more structure in this tune than a lot of other improvisational jazz that I've heard.

As much as I enjoy jazz in general, improvisational jazz is "real jazz" as opposed to the "top 40 Jazz" that most radio stations play. What's interesting is that even if the listener can't predict the occurences in an improvisation the players can and they do it by either musical or visual cues and that's why it's so dynamic and interesting. That's also how the Greatful Dead played live.

That'a just my .02

Yep, agreed about jazz improv, most jazz - and smooth jazz in particular - is less interesting, even though the players may be virtuoso.

There are a few Grateful Dead tunes that are ok...but I just never connected all that much with them.  Just picky I guess.

Yeah but you still gotta love Jerry's white guitar.

Just enough structure to allow for true creative expression.
And isn't that really what jazz is all about?
Nice choice Joe.
