Edge of Darkness by Greta Van Fleet

OK, my good pal Mark R played me a song by these guys last night and I was quite blown away. Have you ever heard of Greta Van Fleet?  If not here's the deal... they are from Michigan and sound very much like Zeppelin... a very hard rockin like back in the early days Zeppelin mixed with a bit of Rush and Black Crows.

Enough about that. Here it is, Live from DTE:

Man, these guys can rock. They're not breaking new ground like Zep did back in their day but they have great original songs that sound like a high quality tribute to Zep which is OK with me. Makes me wonder two things:

1. How they sound playing an actual Zep song?

2. What do Robert and Jimmy think of these guys?

I would have to think that Robert and Jimmy would be flattered that these guys dig that music so much. Plus it just brings more attention to Led Zep.

I'd love to know what Jimmy and Robert think too, Walter.

I heard these guys on the radio the other day so they're getting some airplay - maybe only local but it will be interesting to see how far they can go.

Well, I went and saw Gretta Van Fleet at the Filmore on Thursday and holy smokes these guys rock. It may have been the LOUDEST concert I ever went to. The only thing that comes close in my memory was AC/DC back in the 70's at Royal Oak Theater. Great live band and the crowd was crazy for these guys.

I will check this band out soon.

They have an event planned at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in Rockford, July I think.

I swear my ears are still ringing a little bit so I'm not real happy about that. If I ever see them again I'll take some sort of ear protection.

In response to Walter's question:

I came across an interview where someone asked Plant about new bands he likes and he mentioned Gretta Van Fleet. Said that they are Led Zep I. Wow. He is disappointed that GVF do not give Zep credit for their sound but list other rock bands as influences. Very odd.

Yeah, we wondered if GVF would play some Zep songs at the concert but they did not. They did play a few covers but no Zep. I saw an interview where they were asked directly about Zep and they would not even say their name. Referred to them as "that band" so they are downplaying the reference.

It will be interesting to see how far they go away from the Led Zeppelin sound to their own brand of classic rock and roll music when they release their new album this summer.

I didn't know they had a new album on the way. Cool. Should be interesting and I hope the buzz continues for these guys. Thanks.
