Beatles 50th... what'd ya think?

Lot's of mixed reviews about the performances so I thought it would be an interesting topic to throw around. Seems everyone agrees that Joe Walsh was awesome... no arguement there. He seemed in top form but as a guitarist I saw that he didn't hit every note in the scales he was playing and I believe it was nerves but it didn't detract from the emotion that was emitting from the strings.

At the risk of being pummeled, I will totally go against the grain and admit that I really liked Katie Perry's rendition of "Yesterday." Is she a great singer? No. Did she deserve to sing at the tribute? No. Am I a fan? No. BUT, I think she sang with great emotion, did not lip sync, took some guts to sing a serious song and was not dressed like a skank. Loved the shimmery vibrato in her voice too. It's too bad that she changed the lyrics  from "she" to "he" but that's what happens when a female takes on a male oriented song.

Here it is again:

I agree completely with you regarding Joe Walsh & Kate Perry. I like her voice, but her style is a huge mismatch for Yesterday. I also didn't enjoy Annie Lennox's Fool On The Hill. Too loud & powerful of a voice for it & the chords they played didn't even sound like the correct ones. Then they get a standing ovation???

When you consider the other performances that Perry did on the Grammy show "Yesterday" was a gem in comparison. Interesting dress, foo foo, or whatever that garment was that she was sporting. Much different than her usual attire.

I actually thought that Annie and Dave would be good and I was looking forward to seeing them but I was let down. I thought the whole thing was quite bad and I agree that something was off with the chords that Dave was playing.

Still though, I enjoyed the show immensely, it's just that there were some acts that messed it up a bit.

Did you guys like John Mayer and Keith Urban? I did not. Two hot dogs trying to show off, inappropriately on a classic tune IMO, and the two of them noodling at the same time sounded like nonsense to me.

Thanks for posting Katy's version. I hadn't seen it till tonight. I'v heard good and bad. I thought it was good although too slow. I did catch alot of the show and Polly and I were wondering who the guitarist next to Frampton all night is.

Yet to see the Eurhythmics either. will seek it out.

certainly a daunting task to do those songs in front of Sir Paul himself.

Paul, I think the other guitar player was Steve Lukather who is a famous studio musician and was in the band "Toto."

I also think that Maroon 5 did a really good rendition of "All My Lovin" for the opening song and I'm not a M5 fan either. They pretty much played it close to the original and was just a solid performance IMO as long as you can handle Adam what's his name's vocal.

One last thing... I'm wondering what happened to you and Big Jer's user account. Seems that you lost your avitar and your post count started over.

Nuts!

That is what I get for not checking in on the site for months. The video link did not work any more.

But all is not lost. I checked in on You Tube and found it anyway.

Agree on all fronts with all that posted. She is not my "cup of tea" so to speak. But she did a fine job with the tune. She was emotionally invested and clearly it showed. A lot of feeling there. Some people that are in my generation feel compelled to slam her.

Too bad. That is a knee jerk reaction that a number of we "Baby Boomers" share and it is repulsive. I am a dyed in the wool lover of my generation's musicians but I will never close my mind or be unwelcoming to any new artists.

Paul...that is a good point.

She had to perform the song right in front of Sir Paul.

Jer, I checked out "Fool on the Hill" and unfortunately I am with you.

I think that Annie Lennox is a fabulous singer. Just not for that song. Hell no...
