XTC

Paul Wargo
Seems like we've been in a kind of 80's mode lately and I've been wanting to post some XTC music, this seems like an opportune time. These guys started out in the late 70,s punk scene, when I was "pooh poohing" that stuff, but became re-introduced in the late 80's and became a fan. Musically and lyrically very  thoughtful and unique. There's not alot of live performance out there but here's a good acoustic one...

and this is a video of theirs' of a great song with powerful lyrics that I think represents a man who truly wants to believe but is too blinded by man's inhumanity to man.

The importance of faith is undeniable

Ah yes, XTC.... great band that I've really liked for a long time. Andy Partridge is a great song writer and the first song is very cool. I've never heard acoustic XTC. An altime fav of mine is The Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head.

Their Dear God song is interesting for me because I have the song on a best of CD but rarely listen to it. Why? I love the sound of the song but the lyrics bother me. At first I thought he was mocking people for being cynical but then I found out that he is actually the cynic which gave the song a whole new meaning for me. In an interview Andy admitted that he does not believe in God and that people use adult fairy tales to control each other. For anyone unfamiliar Dear God was one of XTC's biggest hits and was so controvertial that many radio stations refused to play it.

Sara mcLachlin also did an excellent cover of this song.

Yes, "Peter Pumpkinhead" is a great song too. As are many by Andy Partridge. Until I just watched the video for it I didn't realize he was talking about JFK.
as for "Dear God" I know it is controversial but the passion is undeniable. I hope no one is offended. I personally don't agree with his opinion but like the song musically. It certainly isn't as banal as say.......Paul Rever and the Raiders lip sinking on "Hulabaloo" or something. (no offense Seymouro, I just think this forum is best suited to live performance by great musicians.) or at least songs that are lyrically thoughtful like, say, the Isley Bros. posts.

anyway....if he doesn't believe in God, why is he writing a letter to Him????
 OK, I'll lighten up now
