When a Blind Man Cries by Deep Purple

Deep Purple performed this live Sunday at Pine Knob. It is a tribute to the late keyboard player Jon Lord, done here at a concert hall in Great Britain with the backup of an orchestra.

The song itself was written by singer Ian Gillan and Jon Lord. It was recorded during the Machine Head sessions in December 1971 and was the "B" side of a single "Never Before", released March 18, 1972 on EMI in the UK and Warner Brothers in the USA. It never appeared on any Deep Purple studio albums.

Ritchie Blackmore did not like the song and never performed it live. It was not until 1993 that it was performed live, with Joe Satriani as the lead guitarist.

When Steve Morse joined in 1994, he suggested to Gillan that it be played in all concert events. He also asked Gillan to allow him to expand the guitar solo and extend the keyboard performance as well.

Listen and enjoy. There was so much great music played that night and some extremely entertaining theatrics from Alice Cooper (of course).

Musically this was, to me, the highlight of the night.

My opinion is biased because I LOVE Steve Morse but this song is fantastic. Morse to me is a freak of nature with his playing ability and song writing and recording skills. He has it all and apparently gets on with the rest of DP with no drama that I know of.
