I know that hw was well known in guitar and music circles but not to the general public. It's a shame but not uncommon.

Even more tragic is the fact that he died so young and basically caused by his own issues. Many famous guitar players credit him as an influence. I remember seeing him in Guitar Player magazine quite a bit back in the 70's and 80's.
