RUSH - The Trees, then and now

Since Paul put up Dream theater, a band like many others who were influenced by Rush, I thought it'd be fitting to put something up by the power trio.

Rush is:

Geddy Lee: Vocals, Bass, synth and synth pedals

Alex Lifeson: Guitar

Neil Pert: Percussion

These guys have always been the biggest sounding trio I can think of and awe inspiring IMO.

My bro Dean's favorite band of all time (plays drums and idolizes Neil).

The Trees has been my favorite Rush song since it came out in '78 so here is one from when it was released:

And it's also worth watching a version 30 years later... and they've still got it!

Enjoy!

GREAT band!

Great pick Mark. I differ on my own favorite. Anything off "Farewell to Kings" gets it for me. Bought the album off a "cutout" rack at E.J. Korvettes! Anything off this album works for me. But without debate, this band is off the charts, especially given that it is a 3 piece band. Getting pushed into a corner, I'll take the title song "A Farewell to Kings".

For whatever reason, this was REALLY hard to find. Almost all the entries were covers. So I shopped around.

This has diddly for video, but is the original version.

I like the skepticism about royalty. Kind of reminds me of Supertramp's great "Fools Overture" off "Even in the Quietest Moments"...

And even though it was more commercial, I still have MAD LOVE for "Closer to the Heart". What vocals by Geddy!

Yep, I agree about the album. Farewell to Kings is my favorite album but The Trees is my favorite song which just happens to be off of Hemispheres.

So many great prog rock bands from the 70's until today, but Rush remains at the top for me.  The Trees was cetainly an excellent pick to get this thread started; I particularly enjoyed the then n' now effect.

Dave, the FTK video would not play for me.  I saw the guy playing the intro on his new acoustic, and when I clicked around, no FTK vid came up.     Jer, perhaps it'ds a PEBKAC error.  Can you call Nick Burns for me?

Amongst my favorite Rush tunes is Red Barchetta - and what a performance this is from last year.  Gave me a couple goose bumps along the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFT25c-5t98

That was an EXCELLENT follow-up. Not only a great song but the vid was well shot and sounded nice. Good shots of Neil's drumming on that huge kit.

RUSH, what an amazing power trio! I love the fact that they still sell out venues around the world. It only goes to show that great music never dies & is always in demand. What took us so long to post them? Thanks Mark!

I was never a big fan at the time. Too much other great stuff going on at the time I guess, or was I just too damn selective? I don't know, but I do appreciate them now and Mark's post of then and now was really cool. Did Geddy  always play a Rick back then and switch to a Fender later or what? That trebbly "rick-o-sound" feel is still there. I think I prefer the newer one but then.. technology has come a long way.
I think I'll have to investigate Rush more thoroughly with a more open mind.

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Paul, that was a vid of the week some time ago and your making me think of bringing it back  ... stay tuned, it was a good one.

I'm selective about the Rush I listen to but if you want an education just mention them to my bro, Dean.
