Great guitarists

So funny I just got off the phone with Mark after discussing great guitar players after I just saw Jeff Beck two days ago.

This is probably my second or third favorite Zeppelin number behind "No Quarter" and, arguably, "The Rover".

"In the Light" is an absolute masterpiece. Some of the best composing and guitar work ever starts at 7:10 from the erratic when live or stoned on smack...yet indisputably brilliant Jimmy Page. Mystic quality to this, and it leaves me with a very introspective, yet uncertain feel about it.

Nonetheless, quite moving and unforgettable.

Zep was one of a handful of great rock bands of the 70's and beyond. They definitely contributed to defining what rock music was at the time.

Zeppelin were great rock innovators. I never saw them live because everyone I knew that ever went to see them said that they were not a great live band. Maybe they just didn't play the songs like the album or whatever but that's water under the bridge now. We have Gretta Van Fleet now anyway who I DID see. Ironic.

Since this thread is titled "Great Guitarists" I need to add Robin Trower. IMO he ranks right up there with the greats starting with his work with Procal Harum to current. He's never given up and still putting out new work.

I agree, Robin's name deserves to be included with the all time greats. IMO there are many so the list would be quite long. I think most fans that are familiar with the origins of rock music would have some of the same names at the top of their list and would start something like this....

Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page

... but there are so many more greats.

I remember when I was in high school I actually had a running list of my favorite guitar players and even then it was long... and that was before the days of EVH, Steve Morse, Steve Via, Joe Sach, Eric Johnson, etc, etc, etc.

I still distinctly remember some of the names:

Jimi
Jeff Beck
Clapton
Johnny Winter
Pete Townshend
Santana
Montrose
Keith Richards
Dave Mason

and many more, these are just what I recall off the top of my head and most are still in my top 20.

Interesting mix. You don't see Montrose and Dave Mason on top 20 lists often if ever. I think just about ALL guitar fans have Hendrix, Clapton, Beck and Page near the top.

Bob, you got a problem with Montrose and Dave Mason? Both still great but I did say MOST would make my top 20. I doubt they would make my in my top 20 today but back in the 70's... Yes, the 70's... like in going back almost 50 years, I was a HUGE fan of those guys.

Nothing wrong with those guys at all. I'm glad to see Keith Richards made your early list!

Keith is still on my list. He's one of those well known but under appreciated guitar players. I think many people know that he's important because he's in the Stones but they don't know why. In a direct correlation he's the George Harrison of the Stones. Knows how to play exactly what's required for a song and is a great song writer as well. He has studied many of the great bluesmen of long ago and does them justice. And now that I think of it Keith is more like a cross between George and John because after all, he IS one of the "Glimmer twins."

That's a good question. I didn't start the thread but it wasn't specified and I know that Seymouro has a great appreciation for many types of music so....
